Woodcraft iPad App

best ipad appsWe found a really great iPad app for designing your next project or deck building job. We put it to the test with a premier PVC deck builder in Atlanta to get their input. This iPad app for business combines elements of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and 3D modeling into a useful in-the-field app. This iPad app is called Woodcraft and is brought to you from the developer Fasterre. This is a useful tool not only for the professional builder but can tackle your home woodworking projects also. (screenshots and video demo after break)

What we really liked about this app is that it has a broad range of application for both the weekend do-it-yourselfer and high-end professionals. This is app is a very powerful design tool that has a friendly user interface. The Woodcraft app features a fully automated list of materials and can seamlessly switch from 2D to 3D for ease of use. Below is a list of features mentioned on the app store:

– Shop with confidence using the fully-automated Bill of materials.

– Design in 2D or 3D and seamlessly switch between both views. Our intuitive view navigation system solves usability problems common in similar applications.

– Align, rotate and move lumber precisely with the extensive grid settings.

– Create your own lumber types when the app doesn’t provide them by default.

– Work with rough or finished lumber.

– Measure distances and refer to the on-screen measurements when building your project. Precision can be as fine as 1/64th of an inch!

– Work in metric or imperial units.

– Use tools such as the hand saw or table saw to cut lumber graphically and precisely.

– Transfer your projects by email or iTunes between iOS devices: Woodcraft is a universal app.

– Download and share projects with the Woodcraft community in the online gallery and gain Twitter followers in the process.

– Available in English, French and Spanish.

The deck builders at Calodeck graciously let us meet them on one of their job sites and we got to see the finished product that was first designed on the Woodcraft iPad app. We see a lot of uses for this app and could even see Home Depot, Lowes and commercial architects benefiting from this great app. Woodcraft is a universal binary that supports both iPad and iPhone/iPod touch and is available on the app store for $9.99

Been an iPad user from day one of its release. Apple has been innovative from the beginning and now the rest of the world is getting on board. It's great to be able to spread the word about one of their mobile devices.
