New Category in App Store

Are you loving your new iPad 2 with iOS 4? We love the great new features of iOS 4 especially AirPlay on the iPad 2. AirPlay on the iPad lets you wirelessly stream video and music from an iOS device to your television via Apple TV (photos also). AirPlay has its share of initial issues. Sometimes it doesn’t work two-way between other iOS devices, so it has a few bugs to get worked out in the future updates. Apple fixed some of the concerns with iOS 4.3 and AirPlay can now stream video from the Photos app, web sites and Air Play-enabled apps. Apple has also listed the AirPlay as a brand new category on the App Store.

Currently there are only a handful of iPad 2 apps listed and we expect that number to grow as more developers enhance their products with AirPlay technology.

In an effort to make finding third-party apps optimized for Air Play a tad easier, Apple added a new iTunes section viewable on both iOS devices and desktop iTunes. Dubbed “Great AirPlay-Enabled Apps,” it lists third-party applications that support AirPlay media streaming out of the box.

  • iPad users can now access all their iTunes media content via WiFi using the new iTunes Home Sharing feature.
  • The AirPlay feature has been improved so that all iPad apps can push video or photos out to any AirPlay ready device like the Apple TV.  The feature even allows websites to push audio and video via AirPlay.
  • As was mentioned earlier, users can now select whether to set the iPad 2 switch to lock screen orientation or act as a mute button.
  • Photo Booth finally makes it to iOS and this opens up a whole new world for the new iPad 2 owners.  iPad 2 users can select from lots of photo effects to capture and edit their photos taken with their new iPad 2 camera.

The Daily in the App Store

At My iPad Apps we’ve been big fans of some of the news magazines apps that have hit the App Store. The iPad app called Project has been stunning from day one. Now, The Daily iPad App jumps into the fray with the first ever daily newspaper just for the iPad. One word I remember from The Daily news conference event today to describe the new iPad app was immersive. It is true. I just spent 30 minutes going through every page. I even welcomed the few advertisement pages that were delivered. They were amazing too! Everything was beautiful and engaging. The print world of newspapers are a dying breed. How can they compete against such a captivating interactive news medium. I’m one of those people who go to sleep looking forward to having coffee in the morning. No really, I think about it every night. Now, I look forward to reading my new installment of The Daily iPad app with my coffee.  There is a new edition of The Daily early every morning — 365 days a year. They also deliver breaking news stories throughout the day, and many articles pull in data from the web at large, so that stories have elements that live in real time. This iPad app is free for the next 2 weeks. Then it’s just 99 cents a week or $39.99 a year.  The Daily iPad app is currently available exclusively on the App Store. We have to put this in the best iPad app category!
